You will be asked to be exactly
what you already are.
A few evenings a year: cultivated, at ease, attentive to whoever stands outside the circle. That is all that is asked, and it is a great deal.
The circle recruits before opening, on interview, and it will not number more than a hundred people in French-speaking Switzerland.
We do not live off you. We live off the occasion.
You may refuse an occasion without justifying yourself. You may leave the circle at any time, without notice and without explanation.
Nothing is asked of you between two evenings: no availability, no reply, no presence.
A number answers — not a form: a number, and someone at the end of it, within three minutes.
You are never alone in an evening we have arranged. That is the counterpart of the veto: we choose on both sides, so we answer on both sides.
The accompaniment is social and strictly platonic. No intimate service, in any form, at any price.
It is not a clause: it is the definition of the service. Breaching it is the one failure that brings immediate exclusion, on both sides.
We do not ask you for a franc to come in, and we take nothing, ever. What we ask for is time — give it the time you would give a letter.
